Canonical Ltd. today announced the general availability of the highly anticipated Ubuntu 24.04 LTS (Long Term Support), codenamed “Noble Numbat. Loaded with number of amazing features and improvements, Ubuntu 24.04 will receive updates for next 12 years. Current LTS version of Ubuntu, Ubuntu 22.04 LTS will continue to receive updates for 5 years from its release date, until April 2027.

Ubuntu 24.04 Release Schedule

  • February 29, 2024 – Feature Freeze.
  • March 21, 2024 – User Interface Freeze.
  • April 11, 2024 – Ubuntu 24.04 Beta.
  • April 25, 2024 – Ubuntu 24.04 LTS release date.
  • April, 2036 – This is the EOL (End Of Life) for this version.

What To Expect On Ubuntu 24.04 LTS?

  1. The Ubuntu installer now allows guided (unencrypted) ZFS installations, along with the existing encrypted option.
  2. Ubuntu 24.04 LTS will receive updates for 12 years.
  3. GNOME 46.
  4. Ubuntu 24.04 LTS now supports root file-system setups on NVMe-over-TCP.
  5. No games will be included in the install by default
  6. Ubuntu 24.04 features the latest Linux Kernel 6.6 LTS.
  7. The new release of Ubuntu will ship with Linux Kernel 6.8.
  8. Ubuntu 24.04 LTS includes Netplan 1.0, a powerful tool for managing network
  9. New Flutter-based software center.
  10. By default, Ubuntu 24.04 LTS will install with a minimal set of applications.
  11. Quick Settings is a new feature that provides easy access to commonly used settings, such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and screen brightness.
  12. The workspace indicator has been redesigned to be more dynamic. It now shows you a preview of all of your workspaces, as well as the applications that are running on each workspace.

How to Upgrade from Ubuntu 22.04 LTS or Ubuntu 23.10 to Ubuntu 24.04 LTS

Step by step guide to upgrade to Ubuntu 24.04 LTS. Before running upgrade process, make sure you have the backup of the important files.

Updating and Upgrading Current Packages:

Before going through the following process, run the following command to update the packages:

sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade -y
  1. Run the update-manager application.
  2. In Update Manager, click the Settings. button, and enter your password to start the Software Sources application.
  3. Select the sub menu Updates from the Software Sources application.  Confirm the “Notify me of a new Ubuntu version:” option is set to “For any new version”, and change it if otherwise.
  4. Close the Software Sources application and return to Update Manager.
  5. In Update Manager, click the Check button to check for new updates.
  6. Run update-manager -d.
  7. A message will appear informing you of the availability of the new release.
  8. Click Upgrade.
  9. Follow the on-screen instructions.
