How To Mount Windows 11 Shares On Ubuntu 24.04 LTS

We need to configure a few settings and protocols so that Ubuntu can mount Windows 11 shares.

How To Enable Network Discovery in Windows 11

First, we confirm that Windows 11’s network discovery is turned on. On a private network, you cannot see Windows devices if your network discovery is disabled.

You can easily enable Network Discovery in Windows 11 with the following steps.

  • Use the Windows key + I shortcut for System Settings, you can go to system settings via Start ==> Settings, Or you can use the search box on the taskbar and search for Settings.
  • In Windows Settings Panel, You can see the Network & Internet option on the right side of the pane. You need to click Network & Internet, then select Ethernet on the right pane of your Windows Settings Panel.
  • After clicking on the Ethernet setting, You will have two network profile types.  You need to select the Private network profile. This profile will allow devices in your network to be discovered.

Now you need to turn on Public Folder Sharing in Windows 11.

How To Turn on Public Folder Sharing in Windows 11

In Windows 11, you must first navigate to the Cpanel before choosing Network and Internet. You will notice the Network and Sharing Center option in the right pane after selecting the Network and Internet option. Change advanced sharing settings is located on the left side of the pane in the Network and Sharing Center window. To alter the advance sharing settings, click on it. A list of options will appear; from there, choose Private (current profile) and Turn on file and printer sharing. Save your edits, then close the window.

At this point, Windows ought to activate printer and file sharing on private networks automatically, and you ought to be able to see the Public folder sharing settings. The file sharing feature might be disabled if you are still unable to view shared files or printers.

You can also easily enable the file and print sharing by running following command:

netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group="File and Printer Sharing" new enable=Yes
netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group="Network Discovery" new enable=Yes

Now, you need to have Folders on Windows that you want to share.

Mount Windows shares on Ubuntu Linux

Now, you need to install the CIFS utility package on Ubuntu by running the following commands to install CIFS on Ubuntu.

sudo apt update
sudo apt install cifs-utils

Run the following command to mount a  Windows share to the /mnt/Windows_Share_created directory on Ubuntu Linux.

sudo mount -t <strongcifs -o username=<Windows_User_Name> //Windows_PC_IP/<ShareName> /mnt/Windows_Share_created

It might ask for your Windows account password. If you want to include the password along with the command:

sudo mount -t cifs -o username=<Windows_User_Name>,password=<Windows_Password> //Windows_PC_IP/<ShareName> /mnt/Windows_Share_created

If you don’t want to always type the mount commands to mount Windows shares, you can go through the following steps to automatically mount the shares.

Run the commands:

Without any explanations, let’s jump into the tutorial post on how to mount windows 11 shares on Debian Linux on 2024.

How To Mount Windows 11 Shares on Debian Linux In 2024

There are multiple ways to mount Windows 11 shares on Debian Linux. In this post, we will have a look into the two methods to mount Windows 11 shares.

Mount Windows 11 Shares On Debian Automatically

Automate the Mounting Process (fstab)

In this method, you need to add an entry to your /etc/fstab file so that the Windows share can be mounted automatically at boot. Open the /etc/fstab file in a text editor with administrative privileges with the following command:

sudo nano /etc/fstab

After opening the file, you need to add a line at the end of the file in the following format:
//server/share
/path/to/mount/point cifs
username=yourusername,password=yourpassword,uid=yourlinux_username,gid=yourlinux_usergroup
0 0

Save the file and exit the text editor.

Mount the Share:

Run the following command in the linux terminal to mount the share defined in /etc/fstab with the use of the mount command without any arguments. The following command  will read the /etc/fstab file and mount all entries specified there.

sudo mount -a
Now, your Windows 11 share will be automatically mounted on the everytime you start  Linux distro.

In another method, You can use the cifs-utils package. It is the set of the tools and utilities for mounting Windows shares via the SMB/CIFS protocol.

Mount Windows 11 Share On Debian Linux using cifs-utils package.

Install cifs-utils:

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install cifs-utils

Create a mount point:

You need to create a directory on your Linux system where you can mount the Windows 11 share.

mkdir ~/dir_to_mount

Mount the Windows Share:

Run the mount.cifs command to mount the Windows Share.

Replace the placeholders with your Windows share details (e.g., //server/share, username, and password):
sudo
mount -t cifs //server/share ~/dir_to_mount -o
username=yourusername,password=yourpassword,uid=yourlinux_username,gid=yourlinuxusergroup

  • //server/share: Replace this with the UNC path to the Windows share you want to mount.
  • ~/dir_to_mount: This is the local mount point to share that you created earlier.
  • username=yourusername and password=yourpassword: Replace these with your Windows username and password.
  • uid=yourlinux_username and gid=yourlinuxusergroup: Replace these with your Linux user’s username and group

How To Install Ubuntu Along With Windows 11

As we will be using Ubuntu 22.04 LTS in this tutorial, you need to download Ubuntu 22.04 LTS ISO from the official website of Ubuntu. You can get it from the link below.

Download Ubuntu 22.04 LTS ISO

Create a Live USB With Ubuntu 22.04 LTS

You need to create a bootable USB drive with Ubuntu.

Prepare the Windows Operating System For Dual-Boot

You need to allocated the enough space so that you can install Ubuntu in it. It will be good enough if you can delete one of your available partitions and create enough available space for Ubuntu. If you can manage 100 GB of unallocated space for the Ubuntu installation then you can have the smooth installation of the Ubuntu along with Windows.

  • Note: Ubuntu 22.04 requires 25GB of disk space for the installation.

Boot from USB Drive

Boot your system from the Ubuntu bootable pendrive.  If you are booting in the UEFI system then select Ubuntu from the GRUB menu and then press Enter otherwise  you  need to access your BIOS setting to change the boot sequence on BIOS/UEFI to boot a system from DVD/USB.

  • Follow the onscreen information as  you will see a welcome screen where you will get the option of installing Ubuntu or trying it.
  • Click on the Install Ubuntu button
  • In next windows select the keyboard setting. Choose the Keyboard and then click Continue to proceed further.
  • In next screen, choose the type of installation. You can go either with Minimal Installation or Normal installation. You can have also the option of installing system updates and third-party software during OS installation.

Disk Partitioning

If you are in UEFI System you will see the following  options:

  • Install Ubuntu alongside Windows Boot Manager
  • Erase disk and install Ubuntu
  • Something else

If you are in the Legacy system, then you will see something like this:

  • Install Ubuntu Alongside Windows 11
  • Erase disk and install Ubuntu
  • Something else

In either case, You need to go with the something else option so that  you can create partitions manually with the size you want. We will create the following partition in the unallocated space or partition that you have allocated for the Ubuntu.

  • /boot – 10GB (Optional for legacy bios system )
  • /home – 30GB
  • swap – 8GB
  • / – Remaining space in your unallocated partition.

When finished, hit the Install Now button in order to apply changes to the disk and start the installation process of Ubuntu 22.04 LTS alongside Windows 11.

On the next screen select your physical location from the map and then click Continue to move ahead.

It might take up to 30 minutes to complete. Once Ubuntu 22.04 LTS installation is complete.

  • Click Restart Now to reboot the machine.
  • After rebooting your system, Select Ubuntu from  the Grub menu. In Grub Menu,  you will see both Ubuntu 22.04 LTS and Microsoft Windows 11.
